I was driving along Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s 36-mile scenic Loop Drive when I first encountered wild horses descending on rolling hills. To my surprise, one gently positioned itself parallel to my vehicle. In response, I opened my windows and paced my car and my heart with this magnificent animal, wild and undomesticated.
Something changed in me that day. I was only weeks into my wild and undomesticated walk of faith, blind to my purpose, and learning to live day-by-day. It wasn’t until years later when reading a definition of holiness that the Holy Spirit would reveal what lit my fire that day:
“Holiness isn’t a bland attribute of God. It’s wild and undomesticated. Holiness is an interior fire, a passion for living for God, a capacity for exuberance in living out the life of God in the details of our day-to-day lives. Holy is not a word that drains the blood out of life. It’s a word that gets our blood pumping.” *
That was it! I was in full pursuit of holiness!
I’ve heard repeatedly that I seem happy, but the truth is, my journey has not led me to a life of happiness. Learning to follow Jesus isn’t exactly a walk in the park! It takes strength and resolve to endure times of loneliness, rejection and disappointment.
But following Christ is the greatest choice I ever made. It’s passionate, wild, mysterious, consuming, and, well, holy! I’m alive so His purposes can be fulfilled in me!
Do you have that same fire in you, that same capacity to live for Jesus? Or are you on the sidelines, doubtful, tentative? What is keeping you from getting in the game?
Giving and living your life for Christ doesn’t mean you’re hereby signed up for church commitments that can drain you. It means you release control to your Creator so He can fulfill His purpose in you. By pursuing the holy life God has called you to means your blood pumps and your fire is lit to live for Him every day!
In 2016, I hope you join me in pursuing holiness. I encourage you to read the definition again, and let it define the kind of Father you want to serve. The kind of Jesus you want to follow. And the kind of Holy Spirit you want leading you.
And feel free to share your journey with me. I’d love to hear how God leads you in 2016!
