I laughed all day long last Sunday. Unplanned, I spent the entire day with new friends and at times laughed so hard I couldn’t talk! Good times in north Idaho!
I kept wondering all day what made this group of close friends so special. They’re incredibly talented, smart, fun and have hearts of gold, but there was something more to their friendship. And then I realized: they’re bonded together because of their faith in Christ. They’re Jesus Friends!
In the age of social media it’s no secret that authentic friendships are declining. The enemy is artificially manipulating relationships, telling us our identity is based on how many likes we have. Liar, liar. We need to remember who liked us first: Jesus!
The Bible reminds us that Jesus is not only the author of friendship, but includes us as friends: “I have called you friends” (John 15:15). When you know Him as your friend, you can be a friend.
But first, you need to know Him.
Who is He? He’s loving, loyal and a great listener. He’s funny and fierce; gracious and good. He’s kind and considerate; wild and wonderful! He offers perfect advice (only when asked!), and never fails or disappoints. He’s amazing!
He’s a giver, not a taker; has big shoulders to lean on, and wipes away all our tears. He always protects us and never shames us. He’s tough on our hearts when we need discipline, then whispers softly when we need comfort. He’s our brother, our Savior and our soon-coming-King!
Do you know Him in this way? As creations of God, we long to belong to His family. By accepting Jesus in your heart, you can experience friendship, family and fellowship at its best…how God created it! Your new friendships with the family God puts in your life will all have Jesus as the common denominator.
This is what I experienced on Sunday. Out of our personal relationships with Jesus, came fun adventure, deep conversation and jokes-for-days! We were all fellowshipping as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Are you missing this kind of fellowship in your life? As believers, God intends us to live as family. This will probably look different than you think. But if you allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into Godly fellowship this week, who knows, maybe you’ll laugh all day long too!
P.S. I want to say a special thank you to my Jesus Friends in Florida. You are all so fun, incredibly smart – a little crazy – but a lot special! We’ve had so much fun fellowshipping: running road races and watching LOTR marathons, driving across the country and walking for ice cream, hiking mountains and canoeing rivers (well, maybe not canoeing…Birdie), attending Vegas wrestling matches and going VIP for Super Bowls! Thanks for laughing and crying and journeying together!
