Traveling through airports have become more tedious the past 20 years, mostly because of security lines. While the system is in place to keep us safe, it adds hours to our travel plans.
I was thinking recently, what if instead of body scanners to locate unapproved items on our body, there was a spiritual scanner to locate unapproved idols in our hearts? What if our spirits got a check before we traveled about our day to see if we’re carrying inordinate affections for anyone other than God?
The Bible is very clear about having no idols (anything or anyone we put before God in our heart). From the Old Testament to the new, God teaches us His way: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…” (Deuteronomy 6:5, Matthew 22:37). He repeatedly used people like Moses, David, the Kings and Prophets to show us the importance of cleaning out His holy temple.
When Jesus died and ascended into heaven, our hearts became God’s temple. Now, we are responsible to clean out our own hearts from anything or anyone that turns our affections and worship away from God.
The good news is our spiritual scanner -- the Holy Spirit -- scans our hearts for us! Every time we read God’s Word, He uses truth to convict us and show us how to maintain oneness with God. Unfortunately, a recent study revealed only 19 percent of people who claim to be Christians read the Bible! How many of us are living with idols in our hearts without knowing it?
Here’s an example of what happens. I was at a lunch earlier this year and was shocked when the keynote speaker at a Christian University proclaimed to be a Christian but also professed to practice what she called an “alternative method” of faith (based on the deceitful book “A New Earth," made popular by Oprah). Somewhere along the way she allowed an idol into her temple (new ageism), dethroned God, all while claiming to be a Christian.
Friends, unless we guard our hearts, we too can invite subtle idols into our lives. Think about how many Christians are practicing Hinduism by practicing yoga? If we proclaim to be Christians, loving God with all our hearts and having no other gods before Him, then how can we give more of our time and affection to a Hindu god than to the Almighty God?
If this message stirs your heart, will you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any idols you have in your life? Jesus warns us in Matthew 7:21 that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” For those who don’t? “Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.” (v 23).
I encourage you to examine heart and see if there is anyone or anything leading you away from loving and serving God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength (Mark 12:30). His desire is to dwell in our hearts now so we can spend eternity with Him forever! I’m praying for you today as you begin your journey to clean house in your heart!
